The only competition that recognises and showcases the outstanding press photography taken for the UK news media and now celebrates its seventh year.
The 2013 competition has a more extended time frame for eligible images than seen in previous years.
All photographs entered must have been taken between 1st January 2011 and 31st January 2013 inclusive, but they do not need to have been published.
We started accepting entries from 14th January.
The deadline was midnight on the 2nd February.
Designed for press photographers by press photographers - The Press Photographer's Year
In 2011 we received just short of 8,000 entries and our distinguished jury made their edit of the best news and sports photographs taken in 2010.
The 2011 awards results were announced in June 2011 and all these photographs formed a seven week exhibition at the National Theatre's Lyttelton foyer on London's South Bank.
The PPY is fortunate to have found such an ardent supporter in Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks business known for an outstanding collection of beverage alcohol brands including Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Tanqueray and Guinness. We are very grateful to them for their dedication to the competition.
Our aim is to demonstrate once again that even in an age of rolling television news, internet and satellite communication, the traditional still image burns the keenest, fastest impression on the public conscience and is the most effective way to show the world the world as it really is.
